So Much Work Being A Homeowner !! Fixing, Chipping, Painting Whew!! LOTS OF WORK!

We have been having such a damp, wet summer that it is causing mold and mildew to grow where it has never grown before.

This is on the side of the house where the wind, rain and snow blows.
I was walking around my house checking to see what needs to be painted to make it look nicer.  Look what I saw when I looked up.
On the windows, I used a mildew resistant paint, above is just an outdoor paint.

So I started washing, chipping and painting.  Man! is that hard work keeping your arms up over your head to do all that work.

This is how it looks now.  Not bad!  Now I need to do the same in a few other places around the house that I see are chipping.

When you own a house, there is so much upkeep.   My Hubs and I are at the point where we want to downsize.

Next, I am painting all the trim around the doors and windows.  It has really faded over the years as you can see in this picture.

The right side is the new paint and the left is about 5 years old.

I like the paint we used because it doesn't peel or mold.   It does fade over time though. I don't think fading that can be helped with the hot sun.

So that is what I have been doing for the last week or so.  I have 18 windows with shutters on them.  Plus 3 doors, 2 garage doors and misc trim that I did.

I still haven't gotten to the inside of my dirty, disgusting 2 stall garage.
I was out sweeping it last week when I noticed how bad the cracks and holes were.  They are so bad that the sand keeps coming out of the cement.

If you look in the pictures, you see some carpet runners.  We had to put something down because we were slipping on the floor every time it got wet.  My Hubs got out of his car and almost fell.  This has happened more than once.  So, until we figure something out, .. the ugly carpet runners stay.

See the holes in the floor?  That is just a small spot. I will be patching a lot before it is all said and done.

You can see I patched a few spots already

What I plan on doing is taking EVERYTHING completely out of the garage and starting with an empty space.
I told my Hubs he needs to go through his stuff and figure out what he does and doesn't want.    I don't have much in the garage that is mine.  My bicycle and a few planting pots, dirt, etc.  Not much, all the rest is his.

I need to clean and patch once everything is out.  I probably will have to use a degreaser on the floor to get all the grease off.

Once the floor is clean and dry, then I need to figure out if I am going to paint or what.
I also need to figure something out so the garage floor isn't slippery.  I don't want those ugly pieces of carpeting out there again.

I also need to organize everything so my Hubs feels more inclined to put things away once he takes them out.  That is a huge problem, getting him to put his stuff away.

I am hoping if I can get everything organized, my Hubs will see how nice and clean it looks and want to keep it  that way.  Maybe it is wishful thinking on my part.

So that is what my Hubs and I have been doing, and what we still need to do to get my house in shape.   I just don't know if my Hubs and I are going to find the time to get the garage done.  UGH!! So much work when you are a homeowner.

  4. It is hard work and often times .. for us.. certain improvements or fixer uppers get pushed to the side due to the high cost! Chipping.. as you stated above.. is hard esp trying to keep the stuff from falling in your eyes.

  6. I completely agree. Being a homeowner can be very expensive and there are always projects to complete every time you turn around.

  8. It really is a lot of work! Not only the constant repairs, but the money invested into designing things the way you want them to look. Jason is trying to talk me into buying a condo when the girls move out, and more and more, I think it's a great idea. Less work and less money spent on upkeep!

  9. You're not kidding about constant maintenance and upkeep. It's such a pain in the butt!!!

  10. Homes are a lot of work and a lot of money maintaining them. You have a nice big garage. I love that. I think once you get it the way you want your husband will be motivate to keep it that way. You still have quite a bit of good weather ahead of you to get the job done.

  12. So that is what you've been up to. I'm beginning to think that renting is the way to go except you can't put nail holes in the walls. Ha
    Love to you

  14. Oh, I have so much to say about this post LOL

    1. I never knew just how much work actually went into owning a home until we bought ours a little over a year ago. And we bought a house that was only 10 years old, so I'm sure the upkeep has been minimal...which is good. We needed to be broken in easy LOL But it's still nerve-wracking when you come across something that needs to be fixed...

    2. My parents are looking to downsize, as well, and their comment was this: "You work your life away wanting to own a home, since that is the American dream! And then when you get older all you want to do is downsize!" Funny. I never thought of it like that before.

    3. I have tried to help my dad organize his garage a multitude of times, to no avail! I'm so glad I married a man who likes a clean garage - and thankful that I get to park inside of it LOL

    1. You are very lucky Kristen that you found a man who likes things neat and clean. I spend my day following my Hubs to clean up after him. Drives me crazy. He is doing better than he used to though.

  15. My husband always had an office back home that was his turf. His office literally got to the point that we could not open the door to get in it due to the mess - men! There is a lot of upkeep for owning a home, but it is so worth it. After renting for the past few months, I can not wait to own again and not be afraid when the kids write on the walls when I am not looking.

  17. You guys are super busy! I was just talking to someone about this mold problem due to damp hot environments this morning. So common for us here in the south! The house projects never end but you guys are doing a lot to keep your home looking great!

  18. My husband's fed up with the house repairs and wants to sell and rent. I love owning a home and don't think I'd be happy renting. We have critters here (country) that challenge us left and right. I'm looking forward to hearing what you do w/the garage. Ours is ready for a makeover too. And if you find a way to encourage your husband to put things back where they go...do share, hahahhaa, that's one challenge I doubt we'll master here, but I still have hope. ;)

  19. You have no idea what were going through too. I swear it's only been 2 years since we purchased this home and I regret not doing more research when looking for a home. Who knew new york city would start getting massive floods. My basement is no longer the man cave.

  20. I'm starting to talk of downsizing but dh is not ready. He enjoys the riding mower too much!

  21. Thank goodness HOA covers the exterior for my condo! But it does take a lot of work to maintain your own place. Did you know that it takes a lot more energy the farther away your arms are from your core? ;)

  22. Wow you have done so much, good luck with getting everything else you want to do done! x

  23. Owning a home is wonderful, but there is ALWAYS work to be done!

  24. I know the feeling of feeling like you are never done!! I am not big on home repairs, and let my husband take care of that department.

  25. I understand how you are feeling. Our house is pretty old and it feels like I'm never caught up with all the upkeep it really needs.

  26. Lol. I do a lot of projects by myself but every so often we do call in a professional.

  27. Yep, it is a lot of work, but pride of ownership is great and it feels good adding value to your home

  28. I plan on pulling everything out of my garage and cleaning it up too. I love to start with a nice clean space. My garage is a nightmare at the moment.

  29. I agree, with home owning comes a LOT of upkeep! There is always something that needs to be fixed, replaced, or painted. You are doing a great job though, keep up the good work!
