Funny Story About Giant Eagle Gas Perks

I know some of you shop at Giant Eagle.  For those of you who don't know what I am talking about.  Giant Eagle is a large chain of grocery stores.   They have stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland.

When you shop Giant Eagle, you can get an Advantage Card.  With the Advantage Card you can get money towards gas at their GetGo Gas stations, these are called Fuel Perks.  You get money on your card by shopping there.

Last year, we had acquired $2.75 off every gallon of gas, if we got it at GetGo.  My Hubs always uses it for his truck when he fills it up.

He gets 30 gallons each time and we would get $2.75 off of each gallon.  Very nice savings on gas.

So, he goes to use the $2.75 and finds out it isn't there.  We went in Giant Eagle to their service desk and spoke with them, telling them we didn't use it.    They said it was used in a neighboring town.
They were very nice about it.  We figured we lost a card and someone picked it up and used it.    They said they would close that account and open up a new one.  They also gave us our $2.75 back on our new cards.

Great!!  We went on our merry way.   We continued to shop with our new Giant Eagle Advantage cards.   I kept telling my Hubs that those gas perks sure do build up really, really slowly.   So slowly that I was about done shopping there.

A couple of weeks ago, we finally built up our Fuel Perks to 70 cents off a gallon of gas.    They next time we went shopping in Giant Eagle, they told us we had 10 cents in fuel perks.  No Way!!! What happened to our 70 cents.

We decided to go right to management this time.  Someone again took all our gas perks and have been doing it for awhile now.  That is why we could never build them up.

Come to find out, our old card numbers were never destroyed and they were linked to our new cards.   I was not happy at all.  Someone was taking our fuel perks and had been doing it for awhile now.

Giant Eagle, did some detective work and came across the culprit.   My Husbands 94 year old Dad was caught on camera using the card.

We must have lost it at his house and he picked it up and thought it was his card.  But, it wasn't his fault....

Giant Eagle had us get the card from him and throw it away.   They also gave each of us ( His Dad and Us) $25 gift cards and $1.00 off per gallon of gas for our trouble.

We were just happy to learn it wasn't a stranger taking our fuel perks.

  7. That is too funny, I am so glad that Giant Eagle handled it the way they did. They did not have to do that for everyone. Glad you also found out it was an innocent mistake and not someone being dishonest.

When the company compensates, it speaks for the company.
By the way I too don't eat rice (now you must be wondering how I came to know about that)

  28. Sorry ..cant help laughing when you discovered the culprit. LOL.

hey. I think Giant Eagle did a great job in investigating who have been taking your points. We have something like this over here too. But it's the opposite. We pump gas and we are given points. Those points can be used to exchange goods from the store in the Gas station.

By the way, how's is your husband? The knee getting better?

  31. hahaha that sure is funny. Grandpa was getting cheaper gas while you were out of it. I'm sure he was saying to himself everytime he filled up, "how lucky am I". :) I've never heard of Giant Eagle before now but they seem to be a great company refilling your card each time and those giftcards were a super cool gift too.

  32. Ha ha ha!! I'm so glad you all found out who it was and it wasn't a stranger. I love the way that the store handled the situation as well.

  33. OMG Terry that is hilarious. It sucks that you didn't get to use those perks but at least pops did, lol. That sounds like a good fuel program. We don't have a Giant Eagle near us, just a Kroger, and to be honest their fuel perks aren't all that great.

I kind of love that story, too funny. Glad everything got figured out. Though I'm totally jealous; the one place around here that had perks just discontinued them.
