Bad Bruising From Taking The Drug Lovenox ~ Blood Thinners Are Not Always A Good Thing

I just want to show you some of the bruising that my Hubs got from the Lovenox Blood Thinner that they gave him in The Cleveland Clinic.   The thing is, this should have been noticed before the day he was suppose to leave.

No one looked at his leg until he was suppose to leave the hospital and he questioned whether or not he should use the stabilizer in the car for the ride home.    That is when the nurse noticed the wrap around his bandage was falling off.

When she took it off in the hospital, there was some bruising.  More so than they would have liked.  I wish I would have gotten pictures then because the bruising has gotten steadily worse.

When she seen the bruising, she talked with Dr Schaffer and they decided he needed to stay another day to make sure it wasn't blood clotting.   The next day he was released and told the bruising would get worse.
I just had no idea it would get this bad.

The nurses, nor the Dr told us what to do about the bruising.   They did have us putting ice on his knee, but no one said anything about all the bruising, except that Lovenox does cause this in some people...

My question is... IF THEY KNOW LOVENOX CAUSES THIS... WHY WEREN'T THEY CHECKING EARLIER!!!!

My Hubs has been having such pain in his knee, plus where all the bruising is, it is also very itchy feeling.  I decided to do some research and find something that would help with his after surgery knee pain from the Total Knee Arthroplasty.

I came across the herb Arnica which you can get in a cream and also little tablets that you dissolve under your tongue.   I bought both of them and started using them.   I wish I would have thought of this earlier.

Right away, my Hubs said the tightness and itchyness where all the bruising is.  It takes a lot of cream to cover that big of an area, plus there is bruising on the front of his legs too.
This is 2 Days after using the Arnica Cream on the bruise.  Plus he also took Arnica Tablets by mouth.
This is the 3rd day after using the Arnica.
My Hubs said he was very impressed with how the Arnica worked to help take the itching away.  He said it helped the minute I put it on.

If you have a loved one on a blood thinner and is in the hospital, or even at home.  It might be good if you would check them out yourself for bruising.

  1. That is just awful! I'm glad to hear the arnica is helping though. I've used arnica in the past and have always been happy withe the results.

  2. HOLY COW - and you're right, why don't they check it earlier if they know it does that? Your poor husband. Glad the Arnica helped him and took away some of the itching. That's the worst!!

  3. You always find everything to fix him up. Glad it is going down

  4. I was on blood thinner when I was pregnant and for 6 months more after I gave birth to my son. Not on Lovenox though, it was coumadin. I didn't get any bruising. Good thing your thought of Arnica to relieve the itchiness of your husband's bruise.

  5. It's sad because we rely on medical professionals to provide us with the best knowledge and help. That looks terrible, and I can't imagine them not even knowing. That's just insane. I hope it gets better asap! I have heard you speak of arnica in the past and once it again it has helped.

  6. Wow the Arnica works great. That looks so very painful. I had a coworker who had to take Lovenox injections in her stomach for a couple of years due to a blood clot that she got in her arm and she always had big bruises on her stomach that looked painful also but not near as bad as your hubs.

  7. I had a doctor give me Amica after surgery to assist with bruising, he preferred the natural remedies (which is why I liked him). The difference in just a short time is amazing. The hospital should have been checking earlier and had something available to help. Even if they would have adjusted medicines it would have been something.

  8. ouch glad it is getting better but like you said if they know this causes it why are they not checking more/sooner.

  9. I am one of those people that if there is a one in one million chance of a drug reacting a certain way on me IT WILL--I try to tell the doctors but they always seem to think it won't happen-until it does. At this point in life I do what you do--I research whatever it is and try to heal it myself! My mom is on blood thinners as is one of my friends--I will be telling them about Arnica just in case!!

  10. Bad enough to be in pain without the bad bruising. I didn't know arnica worked for bruising. After I fell, I came home and took the arnica pills right away. I always keep a stash of both cream and pills on hand. I'm impressed. I've used it for years but never really knew it was that powerful. I never knew the hemp oil had any power either. I wish I knew more about homeopathy.
I hope this goes through. Google wasn't letting me comment and i've been trying and trying but I see it finally listed my name.

  11. I'm just glad it's now better - they should do some checking first - it's actually important. -.-"

  12. Wow! I had to take Lovenox during my pregnancy (I have a clotting disorder that can cause a stroke, which I was a greater risk for when preggers) and it thankfully didn't do that do me. The injections were super painful (way more painful than the heparin injections) and left me with some very small bruises around the injection site. I always just thought it was from the needle, but your post is making me wonder if it was from the actual drug instead.

  13. Lovenox is so tricky. I had to take it while pregnant and everything I touched bruised me! I'm glad the arnica worked!

  14. Arnica gel is awesome! I am makign my own homemade pain cream here lately because nothing is helping me with my day to day pain anymore. Arnica gel though always rules.
That's horrible bruising, but it looks like it's clearing up much better. Is he taking shots at home? I was on the same stuff and had to take shots everyday for a month after my surgery, it led to even more bruising all over my body. Not fun,

  15. Wow! Those pictures of the bruising are brutal to look at. I think my friend has used Lovenox once during her pregnancy. I'll have to ask her.

  16. I'd never heard of it until today, and now I've heard about it twice in one day. :) That's how those things go though, isn't it??

Glad it's working so well, what a huge difference!

  17. oh your poor hubby. My hubby was on Lovelox as well when he had a rod put into his leg. I'm shocked the bruise got that big. is is a blood clot ? I hope they can help him.

  18. Yikes! Glad it's going down though. Side note: I didn't know arnica could be taken internally.

  19. That's outrageous that nobody even noticed until he was supposed to leave. Hospitals seem to be becoming increasingly neglectful. I'm glad you found something that works. It looks like it's helped him tremendously.

  20. Oh my gosh! I have never seen anything like that before! Thank you for sharing this!!!

  21. That is really concerning that they didn't check it before he was to be released except for the fact he said something. What if it HAD been a clot? Yikes. I'm glad the Arnica is really making a difference!

  22. My daughter bruises terribly, but is allergic to Arnica, which is too bad because it works so well for me. I'm sorry about your husband's reaction to lovenox!

  23. It amazing that the doctors and the nurse did not notice the bruising before. I feel for your husband as this is a major surgery and must have been extremely painful. Thanks for the information on Arnica, never knew about it before, but I can see it made a huge difference.

  24. Owch that looks awful - I cannot believe the doctors didn't pick up it could be linked to the medication as well for so long. I'm so glad you managed to find something yourselves that worked with to help alleviate it. x

  25. I am just amazed at how huge that bruise was! It really looked tender and purple. Ouch. Glad to hear the Arnica worked well. The results are plain as day!

  26. Wow, that was such a big bruise. I wonder why they did not watch out for the bruising earlier. I am glad you found something that works I am keeping this info for future reference. It might come in handy.

  27. I can't believe the reaction he experienced. So glad he was able to find something to decrease the bruising!

  28. OMG, those pics are making me cringe! I can't believe how bad that bruising is! So glad it's going down now. Poor Dennis!

  29. Wow! Why weren't they checking for possible bruising? I am just amazed. When my late husband was being treated for cancer, they gave him too much blood thinners and so he was bleeding from every part of his body. These hospitals are quite careless with people's health and well being

  30. I've seen a commercial about Arnica and it's nice to know that it really does work. That's a bad bruising indeed.

  31. Wow, that bruising was just horrible. I'm so glad that you were able to get a handle on it before it got worse.

  32. WOW! I had bruising after my knee operation, but nothing that bad! holy cow!
Arnica is amazing isn't it? I need to restock my supply, I like to have some on hand just in case. That is really amazing how fast it worked.

  33. That's crazy scary! My dad was put on a blood thinner early last summer after a heart surgery. He ended up having three cranial surgeries in August because it caused his brain to bleed. It is a miracle he survived at all. Glad your hubs is getting some relief. Did he quit taking the blood thinner?

  34. My mother takes a very similar medication and has the same type of bruising whenever she has even mild trauma to an area. I will have to look into the Arnica for her.

  35. I had a friend who used blood thinners as well and had horrible bruising as well. I'm not sure what he used but yeah those blood thinners can cause horrible bruising. I'm glad you were able to find something that worked for you.

  36. wow that's bad i use to bruise easy when I tool lispril but never like this ouch

  37. Oh my goodness, wow! I had to give my mom Lovenox injections every day for a month after she broke her leg. She had minor bruising, but nothing like that. Blood thinners do a wonderful thing to keep you from throwing dangerous clots, but they also can cause so many other problems.

  38. What a nightmare! Thank God the Arnica worked to things could have been worse. Di you reach out to the manufacturers to complain?

  39. This is just amazing to see that happening. I hjope there is no long-term damage.

  40. Oh my! That has to be the worst I've seen! My dad was on a blood thinner, and he to would bruise easily. It never got that bad.

    I'm glad it's getting better.
