Growing Wheatgrass In Jars Without Dirt

I have been growing Wheatgrass to make wheatgrass juice for quite awhile now.

With Easter coming up, you might want to grow your own Easter Basket Grass, Or maybe use it for a Spring Appetizer.

We drink wheatgrass every morning so I like to keep it growing.   I was wasting a lot of dirt growing it in dirt.   Then I went to growing it in flannel and I was using a lot of flannel so I decided to try growing it in jars

I had my Hubs drill holes in the lids of my jars.

Then I sprinkled in some Wheatgrass seeds.  I first let the seeds soak in water about an hour or so.   I then drain off all the water and put it in a place that gets some sunshine.

I try to rinse my seeds and grass 3 times a day.  Sometimes I only get it done twice, but I find it does better at least 3 times rinsing a day.

  1. OMG You are so clever. It does take a lot of dirt to grow. I guess I haven't been growing it lately. Are you getting your seeds lined up in a row (like ducks) for spring. Sorry you are so cold. Yesterday on the walk, it was so windy and cold I thought I froze my face.

  2. This way is easier when I juice it too. I just juice roots and all.

I am not as cold today as I have been.... but I haven't been outside today yet. Might not go out at all. I will probably just stay in and clean so I have the weekend free.

  3. You're so darn creative. I never even thought about growing my own grass for the kids Easter baskets. I usually buy that bag of .99 plastic grass and it ends up getting all over the place.

    1. It is very inexpensive to do Easter Basket Grass. I go to the feed store to get my Wheatgrass grains.

    1. Thanks Rosey,
I like to take cute appetizers to parties and everyone loved the grass growing in the pot with the fruit sticking out of it.

  6. I have never tried wheat grass juice. Maybe someday I will get the courage to try it out.

I adore that little fruit centerpiece thing you have going on up there. I may have to steal that idea sometime :)

    1. Theresa,
My Wheatgrass juice is very sweet. I know why cows chew their cuds.

You will have to try that centerpiece. The Green against the fruit looks very pretty.

    1. Hahahaha Alexis,
It does have some amazing health benefits, but if you can't drink it, you can't drink it.

The homemade is much different from the powder. Mine is sweet, where powdered isn't. At least what I tried isn't.

  8. This is a great idea, and such an inexpensive way to get wheat grass! Do you juice yours or put it in smoothies?

I usually juice mine. I don't like the thick strings it leaves when I put it in the blender. If I do use the blender and not my juicer, I strain out the strings.

  10. Good idea but I don't think I'd remember to do it 3X a day.

    1. Linda,
I don't do it 3 times usually. But try to make it for sure 2 times.

  11. It looks like the way we grew alfalfa sprouts when I was at school - but the wheatgrass looks SOOOOO much greener! Worth a try!!

  13. I've never tried wheat grass. That's interesting that you can grow it without dirt. I love the little Easter basket and have always wanted to try and grow grass like that.

  14. Interesting about wheat grass.... Funny you mentioned it since I had just been doing some research on unprocessed wheat bran. I have been putting some flaxseed on my Greek yogurt in the mornings in order to get more fiber in me... I read recently that wheat bran is a much better source of fiber ---so am going to buy some this week. Didn't know much about the wheat grass. Thanks for the info.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

    1. Wheat bran works for putting fiber in your system. I have used the flaxseed to but I grind it up.
