The Tiny Twisted Tales are a collection of short stories and poems from the rather strange mind of Calvin Innes. Be sure to read my review of Jenny.
Pale Henry is the story of a young boy who has spent his whole life hidden away in his attic, afraid to go outside to play with the other children. Henry is gaunt and sickly from his head to his feet, haggard and thin and as white as a sheet. He spends all day staring longingly from his attic window, dreaming of playing in the sun with the local girls and boys. His only company is his pet cat and the spiders and moths that live in the attic.
This book shows children to make an effort to make friends and to play with others, but also not to worry about being different or a little strange. The book is intended to encourage children to be themselves, even if it's not how everybody else around them is.
Henry eventually goes outside to play with the other children, but goes back to his attic on a weekend because he doesn't want to be entirely like everyone else. Filled with humorous and disgusting illustrations throughout.
He looked gaunt and sickly,
fromhis head to his feet.
Haggard and thin
and as white as a sheet.
His eyes were dull,
and his hair was bright white,
from years of hiding
away from the light.
Stuart The Bug Eating Man is about a man with an unusual taste for all things creepy and crawly. He likes nothing better than munching on a centipede sandwich or guzzling down a tall frosty glass of liquizid slug. Unfortunately his family don't share his taste in snacks.
Stuart would eat bugs,
withhis fork and with his knife.
Much to the disgust of Harriet, his wife
He'd Munch them, and crunch them,
legs andll.
While they'd wiriggle and squirm
and scurry and crawl.
This book delighted my Grandson! He was thrilled and grossed at the same time. Of course, he knows you don't eat bugs... but being all boy, the thought is probably very tempting.
