How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies

I can not tolerate fruit flies in my house.    One year,  I decided to buy one of those cute banana stands that shows off your bananas.  Bad, bad mistake.  Fruit flies took over my house.     I just about went nuts getting rid of them until I found this idea.    I have been using it ever since.

Yesterday, I made my Hubs  banana bread.   While it was cooling, I seen about 4 fruit flies trying to get at it.   I covered the banana bread with a glass container and then set out getting rid of the flies.

All you need is an oven with a light,  and food that attracts fruit flies.

Here, I used wine, kefir milk and a lemon.   I put all of those on a piece of tin foil in my oven, turned the light on, left the oven door open for them and then went to take my bath.   When I came out,  there were about 7 fruit flies in my oven on the food.    I closed the oven door and turned the oven on for a few minutes.     All the fruit flies died of heat exaustion.

I got rid of the dead fruit flies, put a clean piece of tin foil down and put in some fresh food.    I again left the oven door open with the light on to attract them.  When I got up there were only 2 fruit flies around the food...... I killed them too.

For me, this is fool proof.   I might not have to do this again this year, but if I do.... I am ready.

  1. Someone posted once to mix apple cider vinegar, water, and a little dish soap and just leave it on the counter in a dish. Apparently, the are attracted to the smell, fly in, and die.

  2. I am SO GLAD you posted this, fruit flies are something that drives me nuts. We live in the country and grow our own apple trees. Those pesty fruit flies are the only complaint I have about growing all of our yummy apples. I am going to use your idea next year during apple picking season. Thank you so much for sharing!!!

  5. I don't know what mine are. They are tiny and rest on the kitchen cabinet doors. They are not as fast as regular flies. When I see one, which is every day, I can swat them but there are always more. have no fruit (just the phony fruits) on my counter so I don't understand this. There is usually one or two at a time.

  7. Lisa,
I tried that, and I did get a few, but the oven works the best for me. I haven't had fruit flies for 2 days now.

    Terri,
I know exactly where you are coming from. Every time we would sit down to eat, the fruit flies thought they were invited also.

    Keli,
Let me know how it works for you

    Linda,
Hope it works for you as well as it did for me.

    Anthony,
They are probably fruit flies too. The real name for them is something scientific that I don't know. Most people just call them fruit flies. They eat anything though. And breed in your drains, they lay eggs in your dish towels... especially if they are wet. I hate the things.

    Alissa,
LOL... thats exactly what I did.

  8. Cool beans! I use a mason jar with apple vinegar to kill the little buggers. I put a plastic bag on top and I make it tense with a rubber band around the top. Then I poke a few holes in the plastic. Whala! No more flies :D

  9. That is a great way to get rid of those pesky fruit flies. I have used the vinegar method for many years. I also put a little bleach down the drain when we put the vinegar out. I will try your method and see if it works faster.

    Fruit flies:

    1. Easily missed spot to check if you havent already - back of your fridge, usually is a water catch tray (mine easily comes out with 2 screws).

    2. Also make sure you dont let your lawn get too long, they like long grass.

  34. wow! very helpful tip! there are a lot of fruit flies around our neighborhood because of the rainy season here in the philippines

  35. This is too ironic. I had the same problem and went on You Tube for some how to get rid of fruit flies videos. The ideas were not like yours at all. They suggested putting apple cider vinegar in a cup and using soap around the rim. Fail. They also suggested poking holes into a container with apple cider vinegar - so they could get in and not out....a little better I suppose. But something about your idea about attracting them and closing the oven and adding a little heat is very appealing! I will be giving this a try!!
